This ^^ is my baby, Toby.
Toby is a Pomeranian, purebred, but due to inbreeding, he had a gene that made him abnormally large for his kind.

Just yesterday, March 26, 2013, my baby died.

It was at a family get together, but I wasn’t there when he actually passed away. I was out with my sister and cousin, getting shakes at the local Sonic. When we returned, I got out, having a good day and very excited. I noticed my family were all outside, standing around. My dad came towards me and wrapped me up in a hug, I hugged him back and went to pull away, but he tugged me closer to him. That’s when I could feel the unsteadiness of his breaths. I frowned and looked across at my mom, who was crying as well, I immediately thought the worst, something had happened to my grandparents. But then my dad said, “Toby,” and that was all it took.

In a flash, I was standing there, stunned and numb as tears poured down my face. My dad asked if I wanted to see him before he buried him, tell him goodbye. I nodded, not having had the chance to do that when it came to several other animals, so the grieving phase was brief because of uncertainty.

I followed my parents to where he lay, stiff in the grass as though he’d just keeled over. I dropped to my knees and laid down in the grass, my head resting on his still chest and my arms around his body. I cried, calling desperately for, “my baby,” like a maniac. And “not, my baby,” over and over again.

I bent down, giving him one last kiss as my mom pulled me away from him so he could be buried properly. My entire family gathered around me, hugging me, as we watched him be put into the ground and I cried out for my baby again and again.

I cried so hard that I threw up three separate times.

It made me realize just how lucky I was to have a family who understood my attachment for animals and knew exactly how I would react upon receiving such news.

Writing this, I’m still shedding tears, thinking about my baby. My little boy who only knew love and wanted everyone to love him.

I feel that writing it out a few times might make things a little easier, the pain easier to deal with as I try to handle the loss of a large part of myself.
